5 Easy DIY Outdoor Halloween Ideas

Make your Yard Halloween ready with tools you already own.

Halloween is right around the corner. It’s that time of year for spooky movies, haunted houses, and of course candy (not candy corn, sorry folks not a fan >.<). It’s also the only other time besides Christmas where decorating your house for the season is socially accepted, more times than not, encouraged. When I was younger we would decorate the garage. I remember using black trash bags to make everything dark and breaking glowsticks to use as green blood.

While I live in California, now my family still continues this tradition back in Hawaii

Now while there are many different decorations that you buy at stores, did you know that you could use gardening tools to help out as well? Believe it or not, many of items that you already use daily keeping your garden happy and healthy, can turn your home into a spooky scene this Halloween. Here is a list of common gardening items that you can use to spook up your house this year.

We start with the very traditional and recognizable halloween item, and that is the pumpkin. While it doesn’t necessarily have to be pumpkin, as almost any gourd would work. The jack-o-lantern come in many different shapes and designs. Do you want to have something funny or friendly looking? Going for something a little more scarier or sinistor? Or maybe even just want to express your artistic skills? Either way you can’t go wrong with a pumpkin.

Have any chickens running around the garden? Or do you have chicken wire to help in close off certain plants? Did you know that you can take this wire and create ghostly images? You can find several DIY guides online where you can turn your unused chicken wire into a yard full of human size ghostly images.

Another traditional Halloween decoration is the scarecrow. Used in many gardens to keep out any pesky birds can also be used to entertain all the trick-o-treaters. Scarecrows are also vastly modifiable as you can make them cute, scary, or funny. If you don’t have any scarecrows laying around you can also use old clothing and stuff them with hay.

Common items used among many gardeners are lamps. Many lamps are placed around for not just decoration, but also if one needs to head out during the night hours. Did you also know that these can also make halloween decor. You could change the light to something a little more creepy if you wanted. Throwing a sheet over it can create an illusion of a glowing hanging ghost. You can also take paper bags, cut out designs, and presto! You have a homemade lantern jack-o-lantern.

The last idea I have depends on the area you live or the audience you are catering too. Every gardener out there has a couple of things in common, one being they possess garden tools. A very simple yet effective decorating idea is coating your shaper tools with fake blood (emphasizing FAKE blood). Also throwing up a sign such as “zombie battle kit”, or “dealing with bad kids starter pack”.
