Fresh Dragon Fruit From the Yard

Home grown dragon fruit is amazing!

My mother loves to plant fruit trees. The bigger the fruit tree, the better for her. She has grown mango trees, pomelo trees and even rose apple trees. But the weirdest and the most interesting one that she has gotten her hands on is undoubtedly the dragon fruit tree – the fruit in the genus Hylocereus.

Dragon fruits are available in three different colors: red, yellow and white. As they are cacti, they are perfect for the hot and humid weather and great for the gardener who gets lazy with watering the trees three times daily. The trees don’t do well with chilly temperature, but are adapted to surviving up to 40 degrees Celsius (roughly 104 degrees Fahrenheit).

To eat the fruit, the layering skin must be peeled away (think of kiwi fruits) to expose seed-rich flesh inside. The flavor is mild sweetness with a lot of crunch, and very enjoyable when the fruit is chilled before served especially during summer. My personal favorite is definitely pink dragon fruit because I find it a tad sweeter than white or yellow (though I may be biased because that is the type of the dragon fruit tree that my mother has).
