Starting back in October, I was inspired by a fellow coworker to start losing weight. As people would enter the office many would mention to my coworker how different he looked, and would ask how much weight he lost. It was here that I discovered he had lost over 150 pounds! I asked him what his secret was, and he said just count calories. Now I am a person who likes to eat a lot of food, and having to gauge what I eat does not sound too appealing to me. Lucky for me, something called negative calorie foods existed.

Now what exactly is a negative calorie food? As many people know, a negative calorie food is a food item where you expend more calories to digest said food item than the total calories inside the food itself. For example, let us look at celery. Celery is said to contain only 16 calories per 100 grams. The amount of energy needed to chew, and digest celery burns more than 16 calories. Theoretically, you can eat as much as you want and not gain any weight.

Many foods that is considered negative calories are foods that I love to eat too. We have the ever delicious sweet berries (raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries) which contain only 32 calories per half cup. We also have apples that has only 50 calories per 100 grams. Lettuce, which has grown on me over the last couple of years, has only 6 calories per 100 grams. And of course, the party favorite, the watermelons with only 30 calories per 100 grams.

However, there are foods that I also am not fond of. For exmple: cucumbers (16 calories per 100 grams), tomatoes (19 calories per 100 grams), zucchini (18 calories per 100 grams), and grapefruit (40 calories per 100 grams) While many of these foods are well loved by many, I myself just don’t have a taste for them.

With so many different negative calories foods available to eat, one would think that eating as much as you want and losing weight if almost too good to be true. Sadly, that is correct. The truth behind it is that negative calories foods just don’t exist. The lower the amount of calories a food item has, the lower the amount of energy is needed to process it. Depending on the food, it only takes somewhere between 5 to 30 percent of the amount of calories that food item offers to digest it. For example, celery only contains 16 calories per 100 grams. The amount of energy to process that comes out to around 6 calories giving you a net gain of 10 calories.

That being said, negative calories foods can play a big role in losing weight and contributing to a healthy diet. Keeping low-calorie vegetables and fruits in diet will lead to weight lost and healthier lifestyle. And for those who are wondering, the amount of calories you burn chewing is somewhere close to 4 calories per hour.
