Worlds largest, oldest, and tallest trees are closer then you think!

I recently was able to hug (yes hug) the worlds largest spruce tree. This got me thinking, where do the other “worlds best” trees reside?

It wasn’t too long ago that I was on a trip around Olympic national park. During the road trip, near the start of entering the national park, my friends and I noticed a sign that stated the world’s largest Spruce tree. Seeing as it was the WORLD’S LARGEST we just had to check it out. Suffice to say it was well worth the stop.

This got me thinking about the time I visited avenue of the giants, another location that contains giant redwoods. Seems like a lot of these giant trees are in the Pacific Northwest. So now, I have decided to check out exactly where the world’s largest trees reside.

We will start with the world’s largest known tree, General Sherman. It is found in Sequoia National Park in California. General Sherman stands at about 52,500 cubic feet (1,487 cubic meters) in volume. It may be hard to believe, but General Sherman is estimated to be over 2000 years old. The craziest part is that is considered relatively young, as other sequoias are estimated to be over 3200 years old!

While General Sherman holds the record for being the largest tree, it stands almost over 100 feet shorter than the world’s tallest three.  General Sherman stands at a decent height of 274 ft, while Hyperion (also located in California) stands at a very impressive 379.7 feet! Hyperion is a California redwood, many of which reach the heights of over 300 feet tall. I myself was lucky enough to be surrounded by several of these giants while helping fight fires back in 2015.

And last on our list of world recording holding trees, we have the world’s oldest. It was once believed that the Methuselah, an ancient bristlecone tree was said to be the oldest.  However, it was later discovered a few years ago that another bristlecone pine was older. And I bet you will never guess where this tree is located. In the White Mountains of California! There, a bristlecone pine stands that was discovered to be over 5000 years old! The locations of these trees are kept secret to protect them for any vandalism.

While it was quite amazing to see some of these trees in person, it is quite another thing to realize that they could be gone in an instant. There are a lot of different programs and protection in place to keep these world record holding tree’s alive and well, and with the help and proper respect, we can keep them alive for generations to come. Was there anything on this list that surprised you? I honestly can’t believe that California holds so many of them. Anything that you think I should add to the next one?
